New Smoke Alarm Laws: Why Waiting Could Cost You

Let’s be honest, checking your smoke alarms isn’t exactly at the top of your weekend fun list. But if you’re a homeowner in Queensland, there’s an important deadline looming that you really shouldn’t ignore.

New smoke alarm laws are here, and they intend to make homes safer and more compliant. Smoke alarms can save lives and having smoke alarms to the new standard means that the likelihood of keeping your family, tenants, or inhabitants safe in the event of a fire is significantly higher. Delaying the replacement of smoke alarms is never a good idea but now more so than ever.

By 1 January 2027, every single private home, townhouse, and unit in QLD must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed to comply with the new standard. We’ve already seen the rush for rental properties back in 2022 and the subsequent lack of properties, and if that taught us anything, it’s that leaving it until the last minute is a recipe for stress.

Not only are smoke alarms life saving devices, they’re also really not that much of a pain to install. According to the new regulations, a qualified electrician must install the new alarms in order for you to be compliant. This is super important as doing it yourself will mean that you’ve put in all that effort and they’re not up to standard.

Why the rush now?

We’re suggesting you get this sorted now. It might seem soon and as though you have so much time left to think about this but, it’s a simple case of supply and demand.

As we creep closer to that 2027 cutoff, that classic last minute rush is expected to cause serious stock shortages and a spike in installation prices. If you need something done, and you’ve left it late, you can certainly expect there to be a rush fee. Provided you can even get the installers in at all!

Recent industry reports suggest that smoke detector prices are set to rise as global demand and local legislative pressure peak.

By getting your upgrade done now, you’re not just beating the price hikes and being preemptive, you’re also skipping the months-long waitlists that will inevitably pop up in late 2026. It’ll be a weight off your shoulders if you just get it done as soon as possible. Doing so will be most cost effective, as you need alarms on each level of the building, in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms or in rooms that connect to bedrooms, and if there are no bedrooms on a level at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the path of travel to exit the building.

That’s quite a few alarms in total.

What actually needs to happen?

The Queensland Fire Department requires that your alarms are:

  • Photoelectric: More effective at detecting smouldering fires.
  • Interconnected: If one goes off in the kitchen, the one in your bedroom wakes you up too.
  • Positioned correctly: They need to be in every bedroom and the hallways connecting them.

Don’t wait for those “Sold Out” signs or the price tags to jump.
