If you’ve been sitting on the fence about adding a battery to your solar setup, the Australian Government just gave you a pretty big reason to jump at the chance with the updated solar battery rebate and the compelling new savings available.
For a while now, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program has been the go-to for Aussie households looking to slash their upfront costs and make the switch to solar, the cleaner, more reliable option. But heads up: the way these rebates are calculated is about to get a major shake-up. Starting on the 1st of May 2026, the federal solar battery rebate is set to decrease significantly.
What’s changing in April?
Technically, the older (more generous) rates apply until April 30th, meaning if you wanted to take full advantage of the higher rebate, waiting is not an option. Consider this rebate the “early-bird special”, it couldn’t possibly have lasted forever. All good things come to an end and the end is in sight, so jumping on the opportunity to save as much as possible needs to happen now!
Once May hits, two things happen:
1. The STC Factor Drops: This is the multiplier used to calculate your discount. It’s moving from 8.4 down to 6.8, meaning less money back in your pocket.
2. Size Tapering: The government is introducing a tiered system. While you’ll still get a good deal on smaller batteries, the rebate for systems larger than 14kWh will be slashed even further.
This means that the savings you could have until April, will decrease dramatically in May, so if you plan to switch to solar, you really need to do so now. Everyone’s on a deadline and crunch time is here! If you were going to get to installing solar, now is the time.
The Bottom Line
According to recent analysis, a standard 10kWh battery installed in April could attract a rebate of roughly $3,190. If you wait until May, that same battery could see a $600+ drop in savings. For larger systems, that gap grows into the thousands.
With electricity prices continuing to fluctuate, the Australian Energy Regulator’s latest draft determination shows residential prices are still on the rise in many regions, locking in your energy independence has never been smarter.
April is the goldilocks zone. You still get the maximum rebate, and you’ll have your system ready to go before the winter energy bills hit and you can enjoy that delicious slightly smug feeling when other people who didn’t make the deadline complain about their savings.
